Balmoral HexDefence®
Award-winning scour protection solution for offshore wind turbine foundations
Cost-effective, sustainable scour protection
Our HexDefence scour protection system marks a significant change in safeguarding monopile and jacket offshore wind turbine foundations, providing unrivalled performance, sustainability and cost‐effectiveness.
Seabed scouring poses a critical threat, eroding and compromising the stability of wind turbine foundations. Subsea protection typically takes the form of rock-dumping – a labour, cost and carbon intensive practice.
HexDefence is an award-winning, globally patented solution that offers cost, performance, risk, environmental and installation improvements.
HexDefence vs Traditional scour methods
Technical advantages = Maximum value
HexDefence is a unique scour protection system that provides seabed protection, effectively lowering operational costs and mitigating the risk of cable failure.
This innovative system offers a remarkable alternative to conventional scour protection methods, enhancing both structure stability and longevity
Offered as individual segments, HexDefence can be installed as full assemblies or retrofitted as half rings, significantly reducing installation time and costs
HexDefence requires a smaller footprint compared to traditional methods, enabling cables to be buried closer to the structure. This enhances stability and reduces associated risks. By facilitating closer burial of cables to the structure, HexDefence reduces exposed cable sections by up to two-thirds, thus minimising fatigue and increasing cable lifespan
HexDefence offers a sustainable alternative to traditional scour protection methods, minimising environmental impact
In-house testing for streamlined projects
We have installed our own wave and current tank, allowing us to carry out testing in-house for every scour protection project. We are the only scour protection system manufacturer to have this capability in-house, saving time and increasing certainty for your projects.
Frequently asked questions
In offshore wind farms, scour protection around monopiles or jacket structures is a critical element of the foundation design.
Monopiles are large steel tubes that are driven into the seabed to support wind turbines in offshore environments.
Jacket structures are one of several types of foundations used in offshore wind farms, with others including gravity-based structures and suction buckets. The choice of foundation type depends on factors such as water depth, seabed conditions and project economics. Jacket structures are particularly well-suited for deeper waters and in areas with more challenging seabed conditions.
The scour around the monopile or jacket structure can cause erosion of the seabed, potentially leading to instability of the foundation, wind turbine and power cables.
Field-proven, tested and trusted
Balmoral has been the trusted partner for the offshore energy industry for more than 40 years. In that time, we have consistently demonstrated an exemplary track record for safety, and we firmly believe our products have the lowest failure rates in the sector. Customers know they can rely on our longstanding experts and field-proven solutions, based on best-in-class engineering, rigorous product testing and installation.
HexDefence is an elegant, highly engineered solution to the challenge of seabed scour protection. Rock dumping has been effective enough, but has significant drawbacks, and is not always viable when rock sizes required exceed the capabilities of the vessels available. HexDefence has no such limitations.
