ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCE

Balmoral is committed to open and transparent Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.

As a result, the company's environmental obligations are ingrained in its culture, and the business is making significant efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enhance its environmental protection, invest in local communities, promote health and safety, and combat corruption.

We demonstrate our commitment to this challenge through our net zero position statement.

NET ZERO POSITION STATEMENT

The term “net zero” refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emission produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. To achieve net zero, we do not believe that it is sufficient to offset our emissions. Our strategy is to focus on Scope 1 and 2 emissions and to reduce these to net zero by 2035.

To do this we will focus on:

  • Reducing the amount of energy used to produce each unit of output
  • Remove our use of energy which produces house gas emissions where possible
  • Purchase energy from “green” sources
  • If we are unable to fully eliminate the use of fossil fuels, we will offset the emissions which they produce

To implement this change, we will work in 5-year blocks:

  • To 2025 – focus on reduction of use of energy, and sourcing of “green” energy and research into other areas
  • To 2030 – remove use of fossil fuel from business where possible
  • To 2035 – where we have been unable to remove or reduce, we will establish how we can offset any remaining use

In 2023 we will:

  • Set targets for reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 compared to our FY 2022 baseline
  • Establish systems on how we measure progress in achieving this goal
  • Reduce our energy consumption per unit, of output

In addition to the net zero targets our research and development work will seek to move our production to materials that can be recycled thus enabling a “Circular Economy”.

Our net zero plan focuses on how we will reduce carbon emissions today and puts net zero at the heart of our future growth strategy, without compromising value creation or the role we play in employing and investing in people and the communities in which they live.

ESG PERFORMANCE

Balmoral laid the foundation of its commitment to ESG through actions taken in 2020. This included establishing the Sustainability Training and Action Group (STAG) and commencing carbon reduction projects, as well as investing in environmental educational programs.

The ESG strategy was formally established in 2022 and is currently being integrated throughout the company. Additionally, we appointed a dedicated ESG compliance lead who worked with the Leadership Team to complete a materiality assessment that aligns with our business priorities.

In 2022, we achieved the following milestones in ESG performance:

UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Sustainable actions can range from a minimum of 'do no harm,' expanding to solicit better outcomes, to more ambitious targets of leveraging change. No single company can leverage significant changes across society, and we are realistic about what we can achieve as a company and when, and where we are stronger in a partnership to drive change.

A sustainable journey is not easy to deliver, and investing in reducing our impact is a long-term aim for a fairer and more just economy. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) aim to create more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable societies. Strong governance and operating in a sustainable manner ensure resource use does not compromise the needs of future generations with respect to the environment, society, and authority, while creating value for stakeholders.

We have identified the following UNSDGs that are the most material to our operations, environment, and cultural values.
